Frequently asked questions

Our Services

What is the difference between a therapist and a psychiatrist?
The difference is in the degree that they hold. A therapist/psychologist holds a NON-MEDICAL degree, such as a Master’s degree or a PhD. Psychiatrists hold a medical degree (M.D.). Nurse practitioners hold an advanced nursing degree, which allow them to prescribe medications.

What does the “neuro” part of your name mean?
“Neuro” means “pertaining to the brain.” We prescribe and manage psychotrophic medications that correct brain chemistry. Our medical team are psychiatric specialists, not neurologists.

Do you provide therapy or testing?
No, we manage psychiatric medications only.

Can nurse practitioners prescribe medication?
Psychiatric nurse practitioners write and manage psychiatric medications. They conduct patient care in a style identical to a physician.

What age group do you serve?
We provide mental health services to adults over the age of 18. We do not treat children.

Billing and Insurance

Do you take Medicare?
Yes, we accept Medicare. In fact, we are one of just a few private-practice providers in Colorado Springs who accepts Medicare insurance.

Can I pay cash for an appointment if I have Medicaid?
Unfortunately, we do not accept Medicaid and we cannot schedule any Medicaid patients.

How much will my copay be?
Copays differ from patient to patient, depending on your individual insurance plan or policy. If your insurance card lists a copay for a specialist, the front office staff will collect that amount. If there is no copay listed on your card, we will bill your insurance first and let  you know of any remaining balance.

I want to know up-front what my insurance plan will cover. What should I do?
If you’d like to get a better idea of what your insurance will cover, or you want to know about any fees or deductibles you may be responsible for, we suggest you call your insurance’s customer service department. That number is most often listed on the back of your insurance card.

Why do you require a credit card to schedule my first appointment?
A first appointment lasts 60 minutes and that time is reserved just for you.  A credit card is required to secure this appointment. This allows our practice to maintain a full and productive schedule, and encourages new patients to keep or properly cancel appointments they have made.

What is the charge for missing the first appointment?
We charge $250 to $300 if you miss your first appointment. The cost varies depending on the RMNA provider that you see.  Your insurance will not cover this fee.

Can I use my HSA card to pay for a missed first appointment?
HSA accounts cannot be used to pay for missed appointments, since they are not considered qualifying charges.

Urgent care

Suppose I need care but the office is closed. What should I do?
If you have an urgent need and the office is closed, you have several options:

  1. Call our office at 719-473-2346. The night message provides the contact number for three on-call providers.
  2. Visit your nearest urgent care provider. They can assist in most situations.
  3. If you are experiencing an emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.

I’ve run out of my medications. What should I do?
Medication refills are not considered urgent care. These types of calls should be placed when the office is open.

Privacy and office visits

Can I switch providers within your office once I’ve begun care?
No. Because of the nature of our specialty and the need to provide cohesive and ongoing patient care, our providers do not generally see other patients. If you unhappy with your care, please speak to the office manager.

Can my spouse, significant other or another family member attend my appointment with me?
It is up to you who you want in the session with you. But keep in mind that the information we discuss is confidential and often sensitive in nature.

It’s okay with me if your office discusses my treatment with my spouse or family member. Can this be authorized?
We cannot discuss your care with another person unless we have a signed release-of-information form, which is required by law. Just because you invite a family member to sit in on your appointment does not give us permission to speak with him or her, nor does it serve as a legal release of information.

Do I have to sign a release for my records to be shared with my primary care physician (PCP)?
Yes. Because we are a mental health office, all correspondence and the release of any information requires a signed release. This is for the safely of our patients as well for as our office.

How are my records stored?
We keep all documents in our locked office safe where is it secure. We will not release your information without your signed consent.
